Study Design in New Zealand

School of Design Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand

Welcome to Victoria University of Wellington's School of Design. The School is a leading centre of Design in New Zealand. This position is enhanced by its close links with the School of Architecture -together they form an exciting creative environment which is unique in New Zealand.

The School's facilities are widely acknowledged as some of the best in Australasia. Its campus is a remodelled and radically refurbished cargo building, now an award-winning landmark in central Wellington.

The School offers a range of programmes -from single courses to full professional design programmes and an excellent range of postgraduate study and research opportunities. The School welcomes international students in all programmes.

The School's Bachelor of Design [BDes] is a four-year professional degree, comprising a first-year, followed by three years' professional study specialising in one of: Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, and Landscape Architecture. Other specialisations will be offered in the future. Most BDes courses can be included in other degree programmes.

Facilities

The School has an exciting variety of studios, construction workshops, a graphic workroom, a video production and editing suite, photography studios and darkroom, exhibition spaces, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and computer laboratories with a full range of professional design, graphics, animation, thermal and structural performance simulation software.

All full-time Design students have round-the-clock access to the building and appropriate workrooms.

Also on campus is an excellent specialist Library, a well-furnished student common room with full kitchen facilities, vending machines, television and couches (postgraduate students are also welcome to use the staff common room), plus showers and a sick bay -where Victoria's Student Health Service visit at regularly scheduled times.

Major items of research equipment available in the Faculty include: a wind tunnel, heliodon, sky simulator, effulger, beam testing rig and instruments for field measurements of thermal, lighting, acoustic, ventilation and air quality conditions.

International Students

The School of Design welcomes international students into all programmes. Each year over 1,800 students from over 70 different countries come to study at Victoria. The University's strong international network includes a fully-staffed International Centre, excellent accommodation options and a large number of cultural groups and clubs. Victoria International's website is your primary source for information.

English language programmes are offered by the University's English Language Institute, whichover the past 40 years has established a reputation as a leader in this field in the Asia/Pacific region. Victoria also offers a fast-track eight-month Foundation programme, which teaches the knowledge and skills required for university study.

Wellington is a modern cosmopolitan city -one of the best resourced information centres in the South Pacific, in a clean, safe and culturally-aware environment. The many embassies and consulates add their country's cultural and social presence to the city.
