John McGlashan College New Zealand

John McGlashan College runs an International Student programme offering students an education in the English language. Specialist tuition will be given for learners of English. Students come to our College for a range of reasons – to improve their language skills, to learn about another culture or to acquire qualifications that will allow them to attend a university either in New Zealand or in their own country. Each year we have between 15 and 20 students who come from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India and Thailand.

Enrolment
The College accepts enrolments from International students any time during the academic year. However if homestay accommodation is required, enrolment is conditional upon our finding suitable quality homestay providers. This sometimes takes several weeks.

Academic Cost
Tuition fees for the year are $11250.00, or $2812.50 per term. This fee covers all tuition costs. It includes textbooks, photocopying and tuition in English. It does not cover stationery, school uniform, school camp fees or examination fees for senior students who sit external examinations, e.g. Pitmans, University Bursary. An administration charge of $250 will be made.

Conditions of Acceptance
International Students Entry Criteria

John McGlashan College accepts students from Year 7 – 13 who have some English language skills. However intensive English language assistance is available.

It is important that students have a genuine desire to learn and they must have a good record of attendance at their previous school.

Students must be willing to sign the tuition agreement and abide by the school’s rules.

School reports should accompany an application to study.

The school reserves the right to place the student in appropriate courses based on the student’s competency in English.

Should the student require the school to find homestay accommodation acceptance at the school will be conditional upon this being found.

English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
There is a well resourced and staffed ESOL Department. ESOL classes are provided as part of the curriculum. Students are tested on entrance and assigned to classes which fit their needs. Students are prepared for internationally recognised qualifications – Pitman, IELTS, TOEFL and International Baccalaureate. Most of our international students enter University from school.

Academic Programme
A comprehensive course handbook is available for Years 11, 12, and 13 students. Course option information is found under “Curriculum” in the Information for Students and Parents handbook. It is important to choose your courses carefully. The College reserves the right to change your course if you are not meeting requirements. It is important that parents enrolling students understand that some students struggle to pass subjects where there is a large amount of written English in assessments – therefore courses for students with limited English must be realistic.

Orientation Programme
International Students will take part in an orientation programme on their first day. They will be introduced to senior members of the staff and members of the ESOL Department. The programme will include a tour of the school, timetabling, uniform purchase if necessary and the buying of stationery.

Uniform
All students at John McGlashan College wear school uniform. Please see attached sheet for a list of the uniform which can either be purchased at the College’s secondhand clothing shop, or from a local retailer. Cost of the uniform is approximately $650.

Student Care
John McGlashan College has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz

Immigration
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz Students’ passports are photocopied upon arrival at John McGlashan College. Visas are renewed as required and this is overseen by the International Students Enrolments Co-ordinator. If a student terminates their study before course completion the Immigration Service is notified.
