Academic

 

Curriculum and examinations
Mount Maunganui College offers a world class education. We strive for academic excellence in our superb environment. New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approved courses are taught from Year 9 to Year 13 by fully qualified, registered teachers. Students are entered in NZQA external examinations (NCEA) and gain credit to national qualifications.


Subjects
We offer a wide range of subjects, including: English, Mathematics, Science, Computers, Economics, Geography, History, Music, Art, Maori, French, Japanese, Physical Education, Outdoor Education, Food Technology, Materials Technology, Dance and Drama.


Year structure
Our academic year starts at the end of January. There are four 10 week terms with two week breaks in April, July and September.


In 2004, term dates are:
Term 1 27 January to 8 April
Term 2 26 April to 2 July
Term 3 19 July to 17 September
Term 4 4 October to 3 December
(senior classes prior to external examinations)

 

English Support

 

English Language Requirements
Students with basic English skills will integrate more quickly. If required, intensive pre-entry English courses can be arranged.


English Language Support
English language support is provided both in class and through withdrawal of individuals and small groups. We have fully qualified ESOL teachers, excellent English language support materials and a purpose-built ESOL Centre. Senior students are prepared for tertiary study with IELTS-focussed courses.

 

Homestay Accommodation

 

Mount Maunganui College offers high quality host families.
We carefully select our host families and our Homestay Liaison makes regular visits.
You will enjoy your host family. 

 

Code of Practice

 

Mount Maunganui College has agreed to be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz


Health and travel insurance

Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless students are:
a resident or citizen of Australia; or
a national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or
the holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.


If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment. We require that you have comprehensive insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. We also require that you have comprehensive personal and travel insurance to cover your travel to and from New Zealand and your stay in New Zealand.

Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed at their website at www.immigration.govt.nz
