Study English at University of Otago Language Centre New Zealand
The University of Otago Language Centre is internationally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research and its diverse international study body. The Language Centre offers English language preparation for Foundation Year, further academic study at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and for everyday communication.

Courses include general English, English for Academic Purposes, preparation for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC examinations, English for Groups, English for Specific Purposes, and English for entry into undergraduate programmes at Otago.
The centre offers four terms of 10 to 13 weeks duration. Students may enrol at any time. Students are taught in class sizes of up to 15 students. Placement tests on arrival ensure that students are with students of similar ability. The Language Centre offers 5 levels of English tuition from elementary to advanced. Students are taught for 22.5 hours per week including supervised independent learning and activities.
The Language Centre welcomes over 350 students per year from up to 25 countries including Vietnam, Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Chile, Russia, Germany, and Samoa.

Teachers use the latest teaching technologies and students have full access to our Sony multimedia language lab, Mackintosh computer suite and independent learning centre.
The University of Otago Foundation Year
The University of Otago Foundation Year was one of the first to be established in New Zealand in 1997. Foundation Year is designed for international students, New Zealand citizens and Permanent Residents wanting to gain an entry qualification to university.
The course is stimulating and challenging. Alongside classroom teaching (there are no more than 16 students per class) advice and support is provided including free one-on-one consultation times with teachers assist students with learning new information and study skills.
Students are also taught in university lecture theatres and laboratories on campus ensuring that they feel confident and familiar with the university environment.
Professional 24 hour student support officers help students by providing assistance with visa issues, settling into university life or any questions or concerns and accommodation officers are available to help students find the best accommodation options including including homestay, private halls of residence or flatting.
A student ID card gives access to University of Otago resources including Information Services, 24 hour computer suites, Student Health, Clubs and Societies and a number of discounts on shopping, entertainment and travel.
The Certificate of Foundation Studies is an internationally recognised qualification allowing students admission to all universities in New Zealand, most in Australia, and partial admission to universities in the UK, Canada and the USA. Over 89% of Foundation Year students are admitted to undergraduate degrees and most students decide to stay on at Otago.
To prepare students academically for university study, students will be put into one of six streams offered by Foundation Year. Students will be prepared academically at Foundation Year for the degree they want to take at university. All courses include Academic English.

The Certificate of Foundation Studies is recognised by the following universities as meeting, or partially meeting, their entry requirements to undergraduate programs. It should be noted that some universities may only consider applications on a case-by-case basis and that there may also be additional requirements, quotas or specific subject requirements for certain programs. Evidence of proficiency in the English language is required by all the universities and in particular TOEFL is required by most North American universities; many United States of America universities require SAT l and/or SAT ll.

Students have the opportunity to prepare for professional Otago Health Science fields and there are some guaranteed places offered to international students if they meet certain requirements.
Activities at the Language Centre and Foundation Year
Weekly sporting and social activities enable students to meet other international students and New Zealanders. Activities include visits to Queenstown, Fiordland, and Central Otago, visiting a chocolate factory, wildlife reserves, farms, museums, sporting events and activities such as skiing, horse riding, ice-skating, art classes and golf.
Student services at the University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation Year
We provide a comprehensive introduction to life in Dunedin and studying at the University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation Year.
Student Services provide professional support on personal issues, academic concerns, an online visa service, and advice on accommodation options. An accommodation service is on site to place students in a number of excellent home-stays options or to provide advice on flatting or private halls of residence. Students are given an ID card on arrival providing access to university facilities including 24 hour computer suites, clubs and societies, recreation services, student health and counselling, information services, all libraries, lecture theatres, laboratories, careers advisory services, student job search, gyms and all cafes on campus. It also provides discounts on shopping, travel and entertainment in Dunedin. Clubs and Societies are available to students at the Language Centre and Foundation Year. Gymnasiums and Recreation Services are available. We also provide activities, sports and trips to ski resorts and scenic spots. Sacred spaces are also available on campus. Other facilities include: Mosque nearby to campus Synagogue nearby to campus Christian churches nearby to campus Chaplaincy available on campus Other religious or spiritual groups are active on campus with regular meetings at Clubs and Societies.
Careers Advisory facilities on campus:
They provide personal career counselling, a Graduate Recruitment Programme, seminars, resources, current job vacancies, information and assistance with job search strategies and networking, CV writing and interview skills.
