Introduction

The School is located in Timaru, a safe and friendly place and the closest city to the beautiful lakes and mountains of the South Island of New Zealand. It is in the main street of the city and is close to buses, shops, banks, post office, library, cinemas and cafes. We have a range of students from many countries rather than a large number of students from any one country.

Courses General English:

This course covers all aspects of English including grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening. However, this is a practical course that emphasises listening and speaking. 

TOEFL:

A thorough preparation course for the TOEFL examination. This is the preferred

entry qualification for American universities.

TOEIC:

Students arc prepared for this increasingly popular English qualification which has a

Business English emphasis.

IELTS:

Most New Zealand. Australian and British universities and polytechnics have this as a requirement for entry. We thoroughly prepare students in all aspects of the examination.

Fees (All Courses)

Enrolment fee: NZ$120

Homestay placement fee: NZ$70

Homestay: NZ$160 per week (this fee includes all meals).

Hostel or Motel: NZ$100 per week (this fee provides the student with their own room

but they must cook their own meals. Kitchen and laundry facilities are available).

Farmstay: $190 per week includes the cost of transport to and from school.

Tuition:

Full-time (25 hours per week)

NZ$330 per week for courses less than 12 weeks

NZ$310 per week for courses 12 to 23 weeks

NZ$290 per week for courses more than 24 weeks

Part time: (15 hours per week)

NZ$240 per week for courses less than 12 weeks

NZ$220 per week for courses 12 to 23 weeks

NZ$200 per week for courses more than 24 weeks

Accommodation:

A choice ofhomestay, hostel, hotel/motel and farmstay accommodation is available and is arranged by the school.

The Classroom

A maximum class size of 10 and an average class size that is smaller than this. All textbooks, tapes and resources for learning are provided by the school. We also have a small library for student use.

Weekend and holiday activities

You will be living in Timaru, a city ideally situated to visit some of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. Snow covered mountains (yes, there is plenty of opportunity for skiing!) Crystal clear lakes and rivers, bush walks, rafting, jet-boating or just relaxing. The choice is yours. The school arranges opportunities for our students to take advantage of our wonderful location.

Certificates

Each student receives regular progress reports and a Certificate of Course Completion in English at the completion of their course.

Accommodation

Full board (all meals every day) is arranged with local families ($NZ160 per week). This is called homestay. Homes are carefully selected and provide an excellent opportunity to practice your English with a New Zealand family. Host families provide you with your own room, your washing is done for you and a desk is provided in your room. South Canterbury School of English Language will also arrange other forms of accommodation at your request. This includes hotels, motels or an apartment.
Farmstay accommodation is also available for $ 190 per week.
