Tauranga Girls' College New Zealand

Tauranga Girls' College New Zealand is one of the top performing Girls' Colleges in New Zealand. As you will see from browsing our website and prospectus, the traditions of our college are of excellence, participation and leadership.

"Empowering Tomorrow's Women", our college mission statement, unpacks into a myriad of different activities for participation and structures for leadership opportunities as well as high academic achievement.

Our leadership team of Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl, Arts Director and Sports Captain heads a network based on mini councils and houses that feed into their school council, executive, arts and sports councils.

Prizegivings, awards ceremonies and extra curricular events throughout the year are all organised by the students themselves, under the mentorship of senior staff. Outstanding academic success is complemented by achievement in a wide variety of sporting and cultural activities.

Being busy is a way of life for students and staff alike and time management skills as well as energy levels have to be high to maintain the pace of participation in this vibrant school community.

Our co-operative and independent learning activities, extension and accelerated learning options, academic and vocational curriculum choices, career and tertiary education guidance all provide the students here at Tauranga Girls' College with the opportunities to set and achieve whatever goals they set for themselves.

A positive partnership between school and community enables this school to fulfil the "Empowerment of Tomorrow's Women" by supporting the educational and pastoral needs of our young women of today.

International Student Welcome

Tauranga Girls’ College offers a warm welcome to all international students looking for a quality educational experience in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. Tauranga is a city of approximately 90,000 people.

The area is famous for sun, sea surf, agriculture and horticulture and provides a happy balance between large city amenities and the relaxed lifestyle of provincial New Zealand. Tauranga is conveniently located just two hours drive from Auckland International Airport and is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing and most dynamic centres.

Like the city, Tauranga Girls’ College is also growing, providing us with the opportunity to develop and enhance our International Students’ programme to meet the diverse needs of your daughters and to ensure that every student has the opportunity to have an enjoyable, satisfying and academically rewarding experience. Tauranga Girls’ College roll currently includes students studying with us from seven different countries, including Japan, Brazil, Korea and Thailand.

The college provides a wide-ranging curriculum of academic and vocationally based subjects taught by highly qualified and expert staff, as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular choices of activities to develop the skills and confidence of the young women in our care. We are proud of the number of students who experience national and international success in a wide range of cultural and sporting opportunities as well as our outstanding examination results.

History.
Tauranga Girls’ College was established in 1957, with 225 students. Previously, both boys and girls had been educated at Tauranga College, and when the school separated into two single sex colleges, the motto and logo of Tauranga College was maintained. The motto "Pergo et Perago", interpreted as "Strive to Achieve" has served the college well in setting the goals and aspirations of the students. Today, the Mission Statement, "Empowering Tomorrow’s Women", reinforces the words of the motto for the current roll of 1650 students.

English Language Requirements.
Tauranga Girls’ College expects that students can show that they have reached a level of English language ability which will enable them to take part in the school curriculum. (level 3 - 4 on the International English Standards scale.) Students are tested on their English language ability upon arrival and placed in the class most suited to their needs. On-going assessment is done to check progress and as English ability grows a broader curriculum is offered.

A comprehensive English as a Second Language Course is provided with students being encouraged to sit the International English Language test (IELTS) or the Cambridge exams in order to be accepted for tertiary education or to have a formal English qualification which is recognised internationally. Academic programmes are tailored to individual needs.

Homestay.
Tauranga Girls’ College will find and oversee homestay placements for your daughter. It is a condition of enrolment that the student stay in a homestay arranged by the school unless she is living with a parent or legal guardian. Your daughter’s preferences for homestay accommodation will be asked for on enrolment and the Homestay Co-ordinator will endeavour to meet her requests when finding her accommodation.

Upon arrival at Auckland International Airport, your daughter will be met by a school representative and transported to Tauranga where she will be settled into her homestay accommodation. Homestay parents will assist in the opening of bank accounts and purchase of uniform and stationery requirements, and an Orientation Programme will help her to settle in to her new school.

Pastoral Care.
The Director of International Students is available to oversee all aspects of your daughter’s education and to give her support and advice when she has personal or academic concerns. The Year Deans, Homestay Co-ordinator and Guidance Counsellors are all available to assist your daughter, and students also have access to the school nurse and careers advisor.

Fees.
The annual tuition fee for Tauranga Girls’ College is NZ$10,462 (incl GST). Medical, travel and personal property insurance is a condition of enrolment. The school will arrange this for you at a cost of NZ$708 (Unicare policy). Homestay is also arranged by the school. There is an initial fee of NZ$300 for placement, and a weekly cost of NZ$170.
