Wanganui City College New Zealand

The nearest Airport is Wanganui airport, 3 km from our College that is in the town centre.  Wanganui has a population of 42000 people.  It is a 1-hour flight from Auckland and 40 minutes from Wellington.  I go to meet the students who fly into Wellington but we prefer them to fly for Auckland where we have a representative who meets the plane.  The bus comes into Wanganui from all destinations and the bus station is 2 kms from the College.  We are very central.  We make a point of meeting all students and their families that come to Wanganui.

Wanganui is a very safe City with good services and amenities.  We offer a very comprehensive education package that is of good quality and value for money.  We do have a limit the number of International students so we do not have too many from one culture.   We pride ourselves on a good quality education and pastoral care.  We have a Hostel with a separate girls boarding section that we have spent NZ$300,000.00 renovating, plus a number of quality homestays should the students be who are better suited can apply for.

Our Hostel caters for approximately 55 students.  Domestic and International.   We have adult supervisors who some are teachers.  The Hostel is a 5 minute walk to School from the Main Hostel and the Girls boarding is on site, less than 2 minutes to walk to school.

Wanganui is an average size provincial town, much smaller compared to International standards.  It is easy to get around in Wanganui because of its mid size compared to a large city.  It is situated on a river and is very beautiful and clean.  People cycle, drive or take the bus.

We have approximately 46 International Students at WCC out of a total of 560 students 6 Thai, 12 Japanese, 3 Hong Kong, 8 Chinese, 7 Korean, 1 Vietnamese, 1 from Finland, 2 Samoa, 6 Fijian, 1 from Switzerland, and 2 from Germany.

We accept students from 13 Years of age to 18.  Year 9 - Year 13.  We do also cater for adult students.  We do take some younger students in association with Wanganui Intermediate School Year 7 - Year 8.  Their accommodation is in our boarding houses.

We have good community links with Vietnamese, Japanese Chinese, Korean and Thai people who work with us as guardians and support people for students when required.

Class numbers vary from 8 - 24.  ESOL averages between 8-15 and is operating every period of the day.  It is available to all International students and is used as a support programme as well as teaching IELTS.

Classes run for 60 minutes.  They’re 5 lessons per day, and 25 per week.  We have an International student meeting once a week on Tuesday morning.  We target all our students for qualifications towards National New Zealand Qualifications Authority prescribed courses culmination with Bursary and University Entrance.

Certificate courses are completed by late November early December with external examinations for the seniors.  Our junior school finishes on the 3rd December this year. We run a variety of special programmes that are required to suit our student needs if they are not available in the College or not programmed in a normal school day.  (eg Mandarin for Chinese students. Japanese is taught as an option).

Wanganui has a very temperate climate, not too hot in the summer, 28-30 degrees and not too cold in winter 7-9 degrees.  We have 4 seasons.  Wanganui is situated on the West Coast half way down the North Island of New Zealand.  I manage the Homestay programme for the College and we like students to come to the Hostel first, until we get to know them and assess there progression to our Homestay programme.
